your wings

Rest In Peace

I received a news notification in my email that Penny Marshall died. As I do when celebrities die, I said, "Oh, no." But I usually just go on from there. However, news of Penny's death made me cry. Penny was an icon that defined her generation and the loss hurts.

She was the co-star of one the the most popular television shows of the era, all the while not being what most would consider the traditional Hollywood beauty, and without a male lead. Penny was also the first female movie director to make a film that grossed over $100 million not once, but twice. She directed the likes of Whoopi Goldberg, Tom Hanks, Robert De Niro, Robin Williams, Denzel Washington, and Russell Crowe. Penny paved the way for directors like Nora Ephron.

Penny was different from everyone else. And like her brother told her many years ago, "They'll learn to like you." And we did! Penny was truly in a league of her own, and the rest of us were the better because of it, because of her and her talent to make us laugh and smile.
